RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor Course Overview



The RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor course is taught in a variety of small open powerboats such as RIBs, and is aimed at experiences RYA Powerboat Instructors who hold the Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence .


The RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor course is a two day course, including one night that is taught and assessed by an Advanced Powerboat Trainer.


The outcome of this course will qualify you to teach up to Advanced Powerboat, including Powerboat Level 2, Intermediate Power boating and the Tender Operators course.


The certificate is valid for five years from the date of issue, provided that you hold a valid commercial endorsement.


Candidates who do not hold a commercial endorsements are only able to teach Intermediate Power boating.


Our training takes place in Southampton waters which has great access to the Solent. This provides one of the best areas for night navigation practice.

Advanced Powerboat Instructor Course Prerequisites


Those wishing to join the Powerboat Instructor Course must meet the following prerequisites:


Minimum age 17


Required certificates: First aid certificate (RYA or STCW),
RYA Advanced Powerboat Completion certificated, RYA Powerboat Instructor, One of the following Certificate of Competencies; Advance Powerboat CoC; Yachtmaster Offshore or Coastal Power COC. Commercial Endorsement. RYA membership.

Experience: Logged teaching hours.


Pre-entry assessment: Candidates must attend a skills assessment prior to their instructor training course. Details can be found in the RYA Power Schemes Instructor Handbook (G19)

Advanced Powerboat Instructor Course Content


Throughout the 2 days and one night of this course, you'll be taught about the following:


  • Practical boat handling in a variety of situations.


  • Day time navigation, theory and practical.


  • Navigating in darkness, theory and practical.


  • Meteorology.


  • Collision regulations, theory and practical application.


  • Use of engines - including twin-engines installations.


  • Emergency situations - including search patterns and helicopter rescues.


  • Boat and crew ;management' both day and night.


  • Effective delivery of all aspects of the RYA Advanced Powerboat course.
