How we operate

How we operate

Health and Safety Statement

Poseidon JG Ltd (trading as Poseidon, referenced as Poseidon hereafter) recognises that it has responsibilities for the health and safety of our workforce whilst at work and others who could be affected by our work activities. We will assess the hazards and risks faced by our workforce in the course of their work and take action to control those risks to an acceptable, tolerable level.

Our managers and supervisors are made aware of their responsibilities and are required to take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety, health and welfare of our workforce and anyone else likely to be affected by the operation of our business.

Poseidon intends to meet its legal obligations by providing and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment so far as is reasonably practicable. This will be achieved by;

  • providing leadership and adequate control of identified health and safety risks;
  • consulting with our employees on matters affecting their health and safety;
  • providing and maintaining safe plant and equipment;
  • ensuring the safe handling and use of substances;
  • providing information, instruction, training where necessary for our workforce, taking account of any who do not have English as a first language;
  • ensuring that all workers are competent to do their work, and giving them appropriate training;
  • preventing accidents and cases of work-related ill health;
  • actively managing and supervising health and safety at work;
  • having access to competent advice;
  • aiming for continuous improvement in our health and safety performance and management through regular (at least annual) review and revision of this policy; and
  • the provision of the resource required to make this policy and our health and safety arrangements effective.

We also recognise;

  • our duty to co-operate and work with other employers when we work at premises or sites under their control to ensure the continued health and safety of all those at work; and
  • our duty to co-operate and work with other employers and their workers, when their workers come onto our premises or sites to do work for us, to ensure the health and safety of everyone at work.

To help achieve our objectives and ensure our employees recognise their duties under health and safety legislation whilst at work, we will also remind them of their duty to take reasonable care for themselves and for others who might be affected by their activities. These duties are explained on first employment at induction.

Operating Procedures

Whilst out on the water or working in maintenance areas, risks can develop dynamically and quickly.  This, therefore, requires our qualified and trained staff to act on experience to ensure the safety and health of everyone is upheld.

Dynamic risks are proactively identified in our risk assessments. To control these risks Poseidon uses robust procedures that are implemented by our trained and qualified staff team. This combination of administrative management, experience, knowledge, and training provides Poseidon with effective methods of controlling risk.

Our procedures define the safe methods and that need to be adopted during activities to ensure that hazards are eliminated, or risks minimised.

Our procedures are not alternatives to taking other precautions. They supplement other safeguards in places, such as PPE and correctly selected equipment that is well maintained.

Risk Assessments

Poseidon carries out assessments of the risks that are likely to arise from the businesses activity.

Poseidon’s risk assessments are a careful and sensible examination of what, in work, could cause harm to people, so that the Company can weigh up whether it has taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm to its workforce or other people who might be affected by the business work activities.

Poseidon recognises the Health and Safety at work legislation that places key requirements and responsibilities on it as an employer to ensure that the business is properly managed. Competent risk assessments of work activities, processes and tasks are implemented so that workers are aware of workplace hazards and risks and have the opportunity to properly manage them.

We consulted and involved our team members in the risk assessment process. They often understand the process and the day to day risks in greater detail than the Managers. We believe that workforce engagement in completing the risk assessments and developing control measures results in better compliance and use of the control measures than would otherwise be the case.

Our risk assessments process promotes the sensible management of workplace risk. This is achieved by:

  • Understanding that it is common in marine activities that there is a residual level of risk that is judged to be tolerable and in balance with the benefits that will accrue.
  • Ensuring that workers and the public are properly protected;
  • Providing overall benefit by balancing benefits and risks, with a focus on reducing real risks – both those which frequently arise and those with serious consequences;
  • Enabling innovation and learning - not stifling them;
  • Ensuring that those who create risks manage them responsibly and understand that failure to manage real risks responsibly is likely to lead to robust action;
  • Enabling individuals to understand that as well as the right to protection, they also have to exercise responsibility.

Partnerships and third parties

Poseidon upholds a number of professional partnerships. These partnerships are defined in contracts to ensure accountability in all instances is easily identifiable.

For some work, not all, Poseidon does act in the role of an Agent. When acting as an Agent, Poseidon will highlight this to its customers in the terms of business and/or during the booking process.

Specifically, the yacht servicing products may be delivered by the Directors subsidiary or sister company.

Staff Competency & Qualification

Poseidon excepts its duty outlined in the Management of Health and Safety Regulations, 1999. Specifically, Poseidon’s safety framework is built with the use of staff training and accredited qualifications. The training and qualifications, additionally, ensure the standards of our products are upheld.

We benchmark our compressive staff induction and qualifications against recognised industry standards.  Below we provide Poseidon’s Competency Matrix, in which the following definitions apply:

Technical Advisor: This person is either a permanent member of the company or an external consultant. This person is technically qualified to advise on the safe conduct of the activity at the level being undertaken.

Chief Instructor: This person is appointed as the lead on-site with technical oversight of one or more activities, based on their qualifications, knowledge and/or experience.

Ratios: The ratios shown are set to industry standards and are generally defined by our accrediting National Governing Bodies. In the case of commercial vessel operations, Maritime Law and Codes of Practice define our ratios.

Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy

Policy Statement

Poseidon is committed to safeguarding children taking part in its activities from physical, sexual, or emotional harm, neglect, or bullying. We recognise that the safety, welfare, and needs of the child are paramount and that any child, irrespective of age, disability, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual or gender identity, or social status, has a right to protection from discrimination and abuse.

Poseidon takes all reasonable steps to ensure that, through safe recruitment, appropriate operating procedures, and training, it offers a safe and fun environment to children taking part in its events and activities.

For the purposes of this policy, anyone under the age of 18 should be considered a child.

Staff and Volunteers

Poseidon’s staff and volunteers whose role brings them into regular contact with young people will be asked to provide references.

Good Practice

  • A parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult must provide an under 18-year-old with a participation consent form.
  • Students under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent, family member over 18 years of age, or legal guardian.
  • Adults are requested not to enter the showers and changing rooms at times when children are changing before or after junior/youth training or racing. If this is unavoidable it is advised that they are accompanied by another adult.
  • Poseidon will seek written consent from parents/carers before taking photos or videos of a child at an event or training session or publishing such images. Parents and spectators should be prepared to identify themselves if requested and state their purpose for photography/filming. If the Company publishes images of children, no identifying information other than names will be included. Any concerns about inappropriate or intrusive photography or the inappropriate use of images should be reported to the Companies director.
  • Poseidon recognises that safeguarding children is the responsibility of everyone, not just those working directly with them.
  • Poseidon carefully recruits and selects all employees, contractors, and volunteers in roles involving close contact with children and provides them with appropriate information or training.
  • We respond swiftly and appropriately to all complaints and concerns about poor practice or suspected abuse, referring to external agencies as necessary.

The Company regularly reviews safeguarding procedures and practices in the light of experience or to take account of legislative, social, or technological changes. As a minimum, the Company’s Director will review the policy once a year.
